MASERU – Basetsana head coach Lerato Potsane has praised the growth and improvement of his team this season saying he is proud of how the players have grown mentally.
Basetsana are third in the Women’s Super League (WSL) with 13 points from seven games and Potsane says although they still have areas to improve in, growth is there to see.
Potsane was particularly impressed with how his team fought back from a goal down with 10 players after a red card setback to hold Kick4Life to a 2-2 draw.
He said the fightback against Kick4Life, who along with Lesotho Defence Force (LDF) Ladies are the league’s big guns, showed his players have grit and determination to not give up.
“It’s a big growth from last season, we have scored in games that we normally struggle and I think our game against Kick4Life which we drew showed that,” Potsane said.
“We had a red card, and you would expect a team like Kick4Life with an advantage to come hard at us but we fought hard and scored to tie the game. I think it showed mentally we have grown,” he added.
Basetsana will take on eighth-placed Limkokwing University at Kick4Life Ground on Sunday and Potsane said even though Limkokwing have been struggling, his side will not underestimate them.
Potsane said teams like Limkokwing have a way of pulling off shock results and Basetsana have to be prepared for anything.
“Although we had a bit of momentum, this week’s off helped us a lot because we had players that had niggling injuries but they have recovered,” Potsane said.
“We have been working on some tactical issues trying new things. Our main problem is scoring goals and we have been working on that tactically,” he said.
Potsane’s concern about his side’s goal-scoring in his team is a valid one.
Basetsana have only scored 10 goals in their seven Women’s Super League matches this season and their main source of goals has been top scorer Litšoanelo Matete and the duo of Matšeliso Makutoane and Mpho Lekhela.
If more players can help chip in with goals perhaps Potsane will be happier with Basetsana’s goal-scoring numbers.
