Lesotho’s two-man delegation at last weekend’s FIBA Zone 6 general congress in Swaziland is happy with the progress and recommendations from the meeting.

Lesotho’s delegation was made up of Lesotho Basketball Association (LBA) general secretary Palo Mohlotsane and deputy president Sekhoane Moshabesha.

Speaking to thepost on Tuesday, Mohlotsane said congress saw the presentation of reports and deliberation over changes to competitions. The LBA also received an electronic scoreboard and is expecting about 200 balls in the near future.

“The purpose of the meeting was basically about presenting the Zone 6 reports as well as adopting the suggestions made. In terms of material things we came with an electronic scoreboard. We were also supposed to come back with balls but we are expecting them to arrive as time goes on,” Mohlotsane said.

Southern African countries are grouped in the Zone 6 classification by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA).

There are 10 countries in Zone 6, namely Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

The Zone 6 congress is held every two years.

Mohlotsane said this year’s main development is the simplifying of the qualifying process for major tournaments such as the basketball World Cup and the AfroBasket, the biennial continental championship of Africa.

The Zone 6 qualifiers will now have home and away legs instead of single qualification tournaments held in one country. Mohlotsane said this reform will make qualifying more accessible.

“Basketball qualifiers are not easy but now we have adopted new suggestions. There will be home and away games for teams now. We didn’t have home and away games in the past; it was also not easy to qualify.

“Let’s say Angola is the host for the (regional) qualifiers, it’s not easy for other teams to get there as Angola is too far. There are also plans to have an office down here (for Zone 6 countries) and we are hoping it will be in South Africa,” he said.
