BNP to seal Leuta’s fate

THE Basotho National Party (BNP) will decide the fate of its secretary general, Lesojane Leuta, within the next few days.

The party’s disciplinary committee is finalising its judgement on Leuta who was facing a plethora of charges that included allegations of undermining the leadership and bringing the party into disrepute.

He was facing more than ten charges, all of which he has claimed are trumped up by those he says are unhappy that he has questioned how the party’s finances are being managed.

Leuta was tried in absentia after he ignored the disciplinary committee’s calls to attend the hearing. If found guilty Leuta could be suspended from the party or expelled altogether.

The disciplinary committee will also pass judgement on BNP MP ’Makhotso Matsumunyane who was facing several charges including that of disobeying the party.

Matsumunyane’s alleged misconduct is that she went against the party’s instructions to boycott parliament. She too did not attend the hearing.

BNP spokesperson Machesetsa Mofomobe said the plan is to have the judgements before the party’s elective conference which will be held in Ladybrand from the 10th to the 12th of June.

“The disciplinary committee should have the judgements early by the end of this week of early next week,” Mofomobe said.

He said Leuta and Matsumunyane were charged together with two other party members.

“There is nothing new with such cases. They don’t mean the party is in trouble. People have been disciplined before. Even the current leader (Thesele Maseribane) was once disciplined,” he said. “This is a normal way of the party bringing its members to order.”
