MASERU – AT least four people have died and several others injured while a bus and a truck got damaged during a shocking accident at the Maseru Border Gate earlier today.
The Free State police’s preliminary investigations have revealed that the truck lost control and plunged into a nearby taxi rank killing four people on the scene and leaving many others injured.
The police say the truck driver, who was from South Africa and was coming to Lesotho, lost control as he approached the border gate.
Seeing that he could no longer control the truck, the police say he jumped out of the vehicle but unfortunately he rolled under it and it ran him over before veering of into the taxi rank.
The now unmanned truck sped through street vendors’ shacks leaving a trail of debris before ultimately crashing into a mini bus full of passengers and then came to a complete stop.
An estimate of twelve passengers from the minibus were rushed to a nearby hospital in the Free State.
The driver who also sustained injuries from the truck running over him was rushed to the hospital.
New development about the injured and the total death toll is yet to be confirmed as there were people still trapped under the wreckage at the time of posting this story.
Rescue attempts were still underway.
