Kabi investigated by DCEO

MASERU – ALL Basotho Convention (ABC) leader, Nkaku Kabi, says the Directorate on Corruption and Economic Offences (DCEO) is investigating him for allegedly abusing government vehicles during the last election campaign.

Kabi told a rally in Qeme last Sunday that the DCEO is investigating him and his drivers.

“They complain that I was getting escort and security while I was in the opposition,” Kabi said.

Although he had been fired by the then prime minister Moeketsi Majoro from the Cabinet after a nasty fallout, Kabi still had party functionaries in the government escorting him to rallies during the campaign.

All ruling political parties in previous governments have openly used state resources and vehicles to campaign.

The investigation, he protested, shows that the anti-corruption unit is being used by the current government to interfere in the ABC’s internal politics and target him.

“We had conflicts in the ABC,” Kabi said, adding that “we want this government to respect us and not interfere in our internal affairs”.

“The DCEO people are busy interfering with my drivers and security.”

“They must respect our differences and leave them to us.”

Kabi said it is unfair that the ABC is being probed for doing exactly what other political parties have done in the past.

He said since the return to democracy “every sitting government uses the resources at their disposal to campaign”.

“What was done by the ABC to give me those vehicles was a privilege to the ABC which was in government then,” he said.

He warned the DCEO officials to avoid being used against him because “politics is unpredictable and might make the ABC government again tomorrow”.

“They should remember that they are hired and are not politicians.”

The DCEO spokesperson, ‘Matlhokomelo Senoko, said she was unaware of investigations against Kabi.
