Maseru – Lesotho’s national rugby team, Likatola, will leave for Malawi on Sunday for the side’s final international match of the year.

Likatola were supposed to have departed last Sunday but failed due to financial difficulties.

The team was still waiting for the Ministry of Gender, Youth, Sport and Recreation to provide funding.

Speaking to thepost yesterday, Federation of Lesotho Rugby (FLR) secretary general Litšitso Motšeremeli said the association finally managed to meet the Minister of Sport Mathibeli Mokhothu this week.

He said Mokhothu promised to provide the national side with a bus to travel to Malawi.

Motšeremeli said taking a bus to Malawi will force Likatola to ask for the match against Malawi, originally scheduled for this weekend, to be postponed by a week.

“We will leave the country on Sunday. Our meeting with the minister was successful and he said he would help us with a bus,” Motšeremeli said.

“Taking a bus to Malawi means we will not be able to play this weekend and we will ask for the match to be postponed. When we leave on Sunday we will arrive in Malawi (next) Wednesday as it is a two day travel by bus. We will send the message (to Malawi) today because we first wanted to hear what the minister says.”

Likatola’s woes with money when it comes to foreign trips is nothing new. The team faced a similar situation in May ahead of the Africa Cup Division 2 championship in Rwanda.

Lesotho missed its opening game at the tournament after arriving late.

Likatola’s squad for the tie against Malawi consists of players from the national rugby league and some who ply their trade in South Africa.

National coach Roy Nyasha Zhou has kept faith with the same squad that finished third at the Africa Cup in Rwanda.

Motšeremeli said Likatola’s players are in high spirits ahead of the tie against Malawi which will be the first-ever meeting of the two countries.

“The players are good, they are looking good and training,” he said.
