MASERU – IT never rains but pours for detained Sergeant Lekhooa Moepi of the Lesotho Defence Force (LDF). Sergeant Moepi was summoned to appear before the court to answer a charge of assaulting a police officer. Sgt Moepi is accused along with Sgt Nkesi Makoetje of assaulting a police officer, Mohapi Kapoko, and his brother Thulane Kapoko, at the Maseru Maximum Prison facilities in June 2015. His trial failed to take place on Monday because his co-accused did not show up in court. So it was postponed to the 12th of next month. The court said his co-accused Sgt Makoetje did not receive summons in time. Both the accused are expected to report to court on the 12th. Sgt Makoetje was released on M1 000 bail under conditions that he should not interfere with state witnesses and attend remands. According to the charge sheet, the two accused acted in concert and in furtherance of a common purpose when they assaulted Mohapi Kapoko and Thubane Kapoko with the intention of causing them grievous bodily harm. The victims told the court how they endured the assault, pain and suffering at the hands of the duo. They informed the court they were also insulted and punished for reasons they did not know. Sgt Moepi is also charged along with two other soldiers for allegedly assaulting and kicking one of their own, Private Ntšiuoa Molapo, in 2012. She was hit in the private parts with a sharp object. Sgt Moepi is also waiting to stand a trial in the murder of former LDF boss, Maaparankoe Mahao, in 2015.
