MASERU – PRIME Minister Pakalitha Mosisili has asked Lieutenant General Tlali Kamoli to submit a proposal spelling out the conditions for his exit as army commander.

This is according to what South Africa’s Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa told the SADC Summit in his report on his mediation in Lesotho’s political crisis.

In his report Ramaphosa says Mosisili told him that he had held a meeting with General Kamoli to discuss “the modalities of his exit from the command of the LDF”.

Ramaphosa says Mosisili told him he had asked General Kamoli to “submit his proposals on the conditions of his exit from the LDF’s command”.

thepost was unable to verify if the General has agreed to that proposal.

The prime minister, Ramaphosa reported, told him that he had also discussed General Kamoli’s exit with other Generals in the army.

Mosisili has said they are looking for a “mutually acceptable” exit for the General, a man loathed by the opposition and revered by the government.

Ramaphosa however told the summit that members of the opposition “expressed consternation” when he told them what Mosisili had told him about the progress on General Kamoli’s exit.

He said the members of the opposition were unhappy that “the removal of the Commander of the LDF was the subject of negotiation rather than decision”.

“The failure to implement this recommendation forthwith was cause for concern and a sign, in their view, of the influence the army had on government decisions,” Ramaphosa said in the report.

The roadmap of reforms Mosisili submitted to the summit indicates that the government has given itself until March next year to finalise General Kamoli’s exit.

Speculation has been rife that General Kamoli would get a golden handshake and redeployment.

The three opposition leaders who have been in exile for more than a year have told Ramaphosa they will not return until General Kamoli has been removed.
