Road works on schedule, says Directorate

MASERU- THE Roads Directorate says the maintenance of the 46.3 kilometers of the A2 road from Mafeteng to Mohale’s Hoek is on schedule.

In a press statement yesterday, the Roads Directorate said the total progress for road-works is at 60 percent while progress on shoulder gravelling and side drains excavation is at 90 percent.
The project is scheduled to be completed by November this year.

The major scope of work for the plant and design build maintenance project includes rehabilitation of the badly deteriorated 1.5 km section from Mafeteng traffic circle by reconstruction of existing base and surfacing and constructing of sidewalks.

Approximately M50 million was injected into the project so as to prolong the road’s lifespan as well as recover its asset value.

Other works include potholes patching, reshaping of the existing longitudinal side drain, reinstating drainage systems to proper functionality, re-gravelling road shoulders throughout the length of the road, patching and repairing edge-breaks and surfacing asphalt.

Also, the additional works entail road markings, installation of road studs, replacing of relevant road signs, reinstating of reinforced concrete kilometer marker posts and erosion protection structures.
This project, the statement said, is being carried out by W. N. Letsapo Construction (Pty) Ltd in association with SM Consulting Engineers who undertook the design work for the section to be rehabilitated. They are also supervising the entire maintenance works.

“The road linking Mafeteng and Mohale’s Hoek was constructed more than twenty years ago,’’ the statement said.
This was prioritized since the A2 Road which is known as Main South 1 forms part of a very important main link from Maseru, passing through the four districts in the south of Lesotho.

The road is fully improved and the road users are set to benefit from the development.
“Travel time and the cost of doing business will be lowered as it will reduce vehicle operational costs,’’ the statement said.
